[One (1) whole World Domination Arc over, aaaand...

Well, it'd been a pretty nice few weeks aside from some apparent drama with Reigen. He spent a lot more time on weekends visiting Joshua during that time, and was making an effort to text often. Shigeo wasn't particularly good at the dating thing, but as time passed he was getting more into the whole idea.

At least until a particularly hectic event in Seasoning City. Not much news escapes, but there is a broadcast from a domestic terrorist, apparently the prime minister got kidnapped, and then a giant broccoli grew in the city...

It's a few days after the craziness that Shigeo sends a text.]

Sorry I forgot to text. A lot happened.

You aren't mad right?

[ Monika huffs as she stands at the shrine. Why is everyone so--so--dumb?

Three years she's been at Yasogami. Three years! And not once has anyone bit. Well, one person did, but they turned out to be a major creep, so that didn't work out. But God! Not even the transfer student would give her the time of day, and he practically had girls crawling over him constantly! Was she cursed to never find love? Especially when she had so much to give?

Like, what was wrong with her? She was popular. She was smart. She was pretty and athletic and everything a person would want! Maybe she came on a little too strongly, but who doesn't? Some of the girls in the school were total skanks, and look what that got them.

Dates! That she didn't ever get!

It's hard not to pout as this runs through her mind. The fox hanging around isn't helping matters, either. He keeps yipping, like he's rushing her. It's making her uncomfortable.

Whatever. She hastily writes her wish on the ema. Please. Please let me find someone to love forever.

With a deep breath, she hangs it up. Maybe this'll work for once. She's desperate.

For lack of anyone else to talk to, she glances over at the fox. ]

I'm trusting you, Red.

[Joshua has no reason to be. Even if there wasn't a ton news about what was happening in Seasoning City, it was enough to guess that something was going down over there. Still, he did miss Shigeo's texts.]

Are you alright?

[Why is he even here. Tohru Adachi doesn't believe for a second that writing one's wishes here will actually come true. The world isn't a miraculous place like that: if it was, he wouldn't even be stuck out here working this dead-ass job in the boonies. Only fools believe in this working.

And yet... Adachi is just as human as anyone else. And he knows it too. And maybe, given how things have been going lately, what with the police department's biggest case and his own fortunes, perhaps this one instance of optimism is worth embracing. That said, he's not actually sure what to write on the ema here. A transfer that would allow him the cushy position and respect he deserves back in the city? For that Seta kid to have an accident or something that keeps him out of Adachi's affairs? For a cute girl to notice him? That last one gets a slight huff because please, even with his good mood right now, love is still for idiots.

Speaking of cute girls though, there is one here at the shrine, which is surprising. Judging by the attire, she goes to the same school as Seta and his little ragtag group. Easy on the eyes, nice legs... definitely the type Adachi could call good-looking. Makes that Konishi girl look like a sack of potatoes by comparison, now that he thinks about it.

When he hears her speak to the fox however, he can't help but laugh a little from his spot here (seriously, did she think that the fox understood her or had any control over getting her wishes granted), which unfortunately gives away that she wasn't alone here. Whoops.]

[ Monika lets out a yelp. Did the fox laugh?

Once her mind calms down, she realizes how stupid that is. So she spins around to confront the only other logical explanation. The embarrassing, logical situation. She was talking to a damn fox! What if it's a cute boy, her wish already being granted, but he thinks she's fucking crazy so her wish is actually ruined--

Oh. Never mind.

Monika momentarily squints at the intruder with a frown. He looks vaguely familiar, but she can't quite place why. The town's been so active lately, it's hard to keep up with all the unfamiliar faces wandering around.

Confusion soon gives way to more embarrassment, however, so she wants nothing more than to run off and get home. Monika lowers her eyes and laughs weakly, hating how hot her cheeks feel. At least clutching her school bag makes her feel somewhat better. It's a shield from being judged for weirdness by this guy. ]

S-Sorry, sir. I'll get out of your way!

[ After giving a small, apologetic bow, she shuffles towards the exit. As she walks, she can't help but feel disappointed. She really thought her wish had already been granted. Boo. ]

[Good fucking going Adachi. Quick, try to salvage the situation.]

O--oh no, you're not in our way at all! You don't need to apologize either--if anyone should, it's me for laughing like that. But, ah--I just thought it was kind of cute to see someone talking to the fox here?

[He looks to the fox as if somehow asking it to back him up here. It just gives him a look of displeasure.

... Well fuck you too, fox. We're gonna ignore you then.]

[ Monika comes to a stop. Whoa. Did he call what she did cute? Which means by association, he's calling her cute? No way can she ignore that!

She relaxes a tad, her body becoming less tense. Sure, people give her compliments all the time, but it's hardly ever about anything but her academic skills. It gets so frustrating. ]

I'm...kinda used to talking to animals. I talk to my cat all the time.

[ She smiles sheepishly, gesturing at the fox. ] Besides, it seems pretty nice!

[ Well, aside from that weird look it's currently sporting on its face. Huh. ]

Oh, that's very sweet of you! To talk with your cat, and um, the fox like that. I'm sure it makes them happy, having someone to listen to.

[The fox knows your sins Adachi. Do you really think stepping forward a little so that you don't have to look at it's face will prevent this--okay fine, you do that then.]

So, that uniform--you go to Yasogami High, right?

[ She laughs with a shrug. ] Honestly, I don't think my cat cares, ahaha. So this was a nice change of pace.

Oh! Um. [ Monika looks down at herself like she somehow needs a reminder of what school she goes to. ] Yeah!

[ She makes a face. ] Sometimes I wish I didn't. Maybe then I wouldn't have to constantly worry about getting kidnapped. But. [ Another laugh, weaker this time. ] Not like I have a choice.

Hmm? ... Oh, yeah, the recent incidents! There have been an awful lot of kidnappings involving high-schoolers, hasn't there?

[He says, like as if he doesn't know damn well why that is.]

But what do you mean by not having a choice? Do you not like your school?

[Aside from the recent kidnappings putting a damper on things, he means.]

[ She sighs. ] Yeah. I try not to let it bother me, though.

[ Honestly, the creepiness of it all can be kind of fun sometimes. She likes to wonder what it'd be like, being kidnapped. What if it were somebody really cool? Or maybe...what it'd be like to kidnap someone.

...But she won't say that out loud. ]

Anyway, ahaha. My parents kind of insisted. They wanted me to go to their high school, keep it in the family, blah blah. I like it well enough! I don't think it's wrong to want more, though.

Well... my house got rebuilt by the person who burned it down. And Mogami listened when I asked him not to kill someone...

The broccoli was good I think, since I grew that instead of exploding.

[Or rather, because his parents are people that he rarely speaks with now, and honestly can't remember if they had honestly cared about what school he had gone to, as long as it resulted in a respectable job and not becoming a family embarrassment. Ha...]

But you're right, there's nothing wrong with wanting more! Not that Inaba is bad or anything, but it's too small a town to contain the more ambitious of us here, you know?

[ And she liked how he said that. "The more ambitious of us." It felt good to not be alone in something. God knows she wasn't finding what she wanted in Inaba. ]

Are you from the city? Or, well, anywhere bigger than Inaba? What's it like?

[ Monika's fully invested now. None of the transfer students that float in and out of school ever talk to her long enough for her to get this info. She needs to know for a fact that her chances at love are better elsewhere! ]

No. In fact, it's been rather calm, which I suppose explains some things if Mogami has returned back to your city.

[Or had never really left? In which case, we'll have to look into some things more on our end here...]

Regardless, I'm glad to hear that you're okay now.

The city's a lot bigger than Inaba--lots of people, always bustling with activity, nothing like this place. There was always something happening, which made it an exciting place to be. Of course, that always meant I was busy, what with the amount of news and cases that went on there.

[Except, despite all his hard work, Adachi was always passed over while the younger, more talented ones were noticed and praised... ugh. Kind of wishing he hadn't thought about the city now, it's just depressing.]

[ All of that sounds incredibly amazing, and God knows she'd love to pick his brain for more things so she could live vicariously through him. However, his last few words make one of her eyebrows quirk up. ]

News? And cases? [ Her eyes narrow thoughtfully, then suspiciously. ] Are you a reporter?

[ That'd definitely make sense. They've been buzzing around like flies lately. This was all probably some ruse to get a story out of her... ]

I'm glad you're safe, too.

[Genuinely. He was sort of dreading bad news.]

I can get back to normal life.

[After growing a giant broccoli currently being worshipped as a "divine tree"...]

Oh, god no. [Hahaha] I'm a police officer; one of Inaba's finest, transferred in from the city to help pick up some of the slack here.

[He even does the formal salute, before dropping his hand with a laugh.]

Of course, until recently, it had been pretty quiet around these parts. Most days it seems like the only thing that happens here is paperwork. Which, I guess isn't all that different from being in the city either. Must be a universal constant of some kind, loading paperwork onto the newbie.

Monika clutches her bag close again, then puts it back at her side, then pulls it close once more. Wait, what if he thinks she's trying to hide a weapon or something? Crap! ]

Ohh, wow! I didn't expect that! Ahaha, neat!

[ She abruptly drops her schoolbag to the ground. Maybe if she's not touching it, he can't find imaginary weapons! It's the ground that's now armed, not her! ]

I'm really glad we've got some more protection around here!

[ But seriously, he does not give off a cop vibe. Maybe that's so he can arrest people more easily. Clever. And terrifying. ]

[Okay that behavior is suspicious as all hell, except...

Oh, you dropped your bag Miss!

[And he just... fucking picks it up and holds it out to hand it back to her without even attempting to try to look inside for any suspicious items or confiscate it from her. Because really, the likelihood of a cute high-school girl having something to look for in here? Not likely.]

[ Monika tries and fails to stifle a yelp once he comes closer, her future flashing before her eyes. Everything? Ruined. Her parents would hate her. No university, no job, no anything. She'd end up hanging around love hotels, trying to scrape by--

She swallows hard and stares at him for a while, wondering if this is all some trick, but then she hesitantly takes the bag from him. So far, so good. She's not being carted away in a cop car, so that's something. ]

Um. Thanks!

[ God, she is so embarrassing. Maybe this is why people avoid her like the plague sometimes. ]

S-Sorry. I've heard stories about, well. [ She shakes her head. The last thing she wants to do is offend him. He might not be so nice then. ] Never mind. Were you going to write a wish?
